Epic Rematch Announced for the Royal Rumble
We are now just over a month away from one of the biggest events of the year, there are many roads in WWE, but there is only one that leads to WrestleMania, and that begins at The Royal Rumble.
WWE are already stepping up their game ahead of the event and this week on Monday Night Raw General Manager Mick Foley announced that there will be an incredible rematch for the Universal Championship at The Royal Rumble between Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns.
The difference between this match and the one that took place at Roadblock: End of the Line of Sunday Night is that Kevin Owen’s best friend Chris Jericho will be locked inside a shark cage hanging above the ring, to ensure that he doesn’t involve himself in the match like he did this past week.
Jericho and Owens pulled a fast one and had the WWE Universe convinced that they were no longer friends, until the main event when Jericho came running out and attacked his friend Owens and hit him with a Codebreaker, this led to the DQ win for Roman Reigns and because titles can’t change hands through a DQ, it meant that Owens retained.
Following the match, the duo celebrated together and it seemed that even though their plan meant that Owens will now spend the festive period as the Universal Champion, they made an enemy out of Mick Foley and he has now announced this match.
NXT’s last Takeover event had a match much like this one when Authors of Pain manager Paul Ellering was put into a shark cage and hung high above the ring for his team’s match against TM-61. Ellering still managed to interfere in the match and dropped a chain into the ring for his team to use ahead of their win in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.
This means that despite the fact that Jericho is scared of heights and that he is locked in a cage above the ring, he can still drop objects down to help his best friend. The problem here as well is the fact that whilst Mick has neutralised Jericho, he isn’t doing anything to stop the threat of Seth Rollins.
Rollins will no doubt have his hands full with the returning Triple H at this point, but this doesn’t mean that he won’t come out and make his presence known in this match as well.
Rumours currently suggest that Roman Reigns could become the first ever United States and Universal Champion at The Royal Rumble, but none of the WWE Universe have brought into the discussion that Finn Balor could be ready to make his WWE return at this point.
The first ever Universal Champion has been out of action since the night after SummerSlam back in August, but it seems that all the updates surrounding the former NXT Champion have said that his rehab is going as well as could be expected, and he could make his return in just over a months time.
There are many different components that could go into this match, but it is thought that this will definitely not be one without controversy. The Royal Rumble itself always main events the pay-per-view, which means that this match will be just before the 30-man over-the-top rope battle royale. Because this match usually determines the person who will fight in the main event of WrestleMania, and that is thought to hold more weight.
Roman Reigns is rumoured to be facing Braun Strowman for the United States Championship at WrestleMania, whilst Kevin Owens takes on his friend Chris Jericho, which means that a lot could change between now and April, but it is highly unlikely that Roman Reigns will be walking out of San Antonio with the Universal Championship.
Remember that following The Royal Rumble, Raw also have FastLane on March 5th to continue their build up to WrestleMania the following month, so even if Kevin Owens manages to retain his Championship with all the odds stacked against him, it doesn’t mean that he will be walking into the biggest event of the year with the title. So much can change in WWE in the space of a few months.
